چکیده

This paper compares ten vowels sounds across gender and accent. Each formant for each vowel was analysed individually across data sets, but no comparison was drawn directly between the formant relationship within each vowel. The objective here was to examine the formants individually across gender and accent to establish a method for transforming vowel quality in a rule-based synthesis system and thus increase its range of voices. Further, it was hoped that it would make the comparison of English formant data across differing accents more simple. Three sets of American English data were utilised in the analysis, and compared against two British English accents Received Pronunciation (RP) and a General Northern accent (GN). Initial findings suggest that the relative positions of certain vowel formants are particularly static across gender, least variation being found with the second formant frequency. When accent was considered, a greater degree of variation occurred, this being predominantly found with mid-open and mid-closed vowel classes.

Adult listeners' processing of indexical versus linguistic differences in a pre-attentive discrimination paradigm

The human ability to comprehend speech regardless of variation across speakers and accents has long puzzled researchers. Human listeners appear to employ separate mechanisms to cope with speaker versus accent variation. The present study uses event-related potentials (ERP) to test whether such different mechanisms exist at a preattentive level of speech processing. We assessed Australian Englis...

Improvements to vowel categorization in non-native regional accents resulting from multiple- versus single-talker training: A computational approach

A computational modeling study was conducted using multinomial logistic regression to predict whether exposure to an unfamiliar regional accent of English would influence vowel categorization in (1) the exposure accent, (2) the native accent, and (3) another unfamiliar accent. We manipulated the number of talkers in the exposure data to determine whether talker variability influenced the effica...

The Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners

This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...

Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training: Target- ing Second Language Vowel Perception Improves Pronunciation

This paper first provides an overview of factors that constrain ultimate attainment in adult second language (L2) pronunciation, finding that first language influence and the quantity and quality of L2 phonetic input account for much of the variation in the degree of foreign accent found across adult L2 learners. The author then evaluates current approaches to computer assisted pronunciation tr...

Comparing identification of standardized and regionally valid vowels.

PURPOSE In perception studies, it is common to use vowel stimuli from standardized recordings or synthetic stimuli created using values from well-known published research. Although the use of standardized stimuli is convenient, unconsidered dialect and regional accent differences may introduce confounding effects. The goal of this study was to examine the effect of regional accent variation on ...
